Selling overseas is easy to start and hard to get right

Most stores can technically ship abroad on day one. The problems show up in the details, currency, tax, duties and domains, and they quietly cost you conversions and margin.

01

Prices that confuse buyers

AUD at a US checkout, no rounding rules and FX that shifts daily erodes trust at the worst moment.

02

Duties and tax surprises

Unexpected charges at the door drive refused deliveries, chargebacks and one-star reviews.

03

The wrong domain setup

Subfolders, subdomains or ccTLDs each carry SEO and trust trade-offs that are painful to undo later.

04

Fulfilment that can't scale

Shipping every order from Australia looks fine until volume, transit times and returns become the bottleneck.

05

Broken hreflang and duplicate content

Google serves the wrong regional page, splitting authority and cannibalising your own rankings.

06

Apps that assume one market

Subscriptions, reviews and loyalty tools that were never configured for multi-currency start throwing errors.

Is this the right service for you?

A good fit if you

  • Have a proven AU store and clear demand from one or two overseas markets
  • Want local currency, pricing and tax done properly, not bolted on
  • Are weighing US vs UK vs NZ vs EU and need the domain and tax model decided
  • Plan to move some fulfilment closer to the customer as volume grows
  • Want SEO, hreflang and regional catalogues handled at launch, not patched later

Not a fit if you

  • Haven't validated demand and just want to switch on global shipping
  • Need a brand-new store built first, start with our Shopify build service
  • Are on a platform other than Shopify, we're Shopify-only
  • Want the cheapest possible setup with no tax or duty planning

What international expansion includes

Every market is scoped after discovery. A typical engagement covers the strategy, the technical build and the integrations that keep your stack working across borders.

Strategy & market setup

  • Market and domain strategy, subfolder, subdomain or ccTLD, with the SEO trade-offs mapped
  • Local currency and rounding rules per market via Shopify Markets
  • Duty and tax model, DDP vs DDU, registration thresholds and display rules
  • Regional pricing and catalogue scoping, including products you exclude by market

Technical deliverables

  • Shopify Markets configuration with per-market domains and language
  • Correct hreflang, canonical and geo-redirect logic that doesn't trap crawlers
  • Localised checkout, currency, payment methods and address formats
  • Regional content, currency selector and market-aware theme sections

Fulfilment & integrations

  • Fulfilment model, AU-shipped, 3PL or hybrid, mapped to transit and cost
  • Tax and duty apps or Shopify-native settings wired to your accounting
  • Local payment gateways and BNPL relevant to each market
  • Subscriptions, reviews and loyalty apps re-checked for multi-currency

How we run an expansion

A staged approach so you launch each market on evidence, not guesswork.

01

Discovery

We review your store, demand signals and target markets, then agree scope and priority order. Roughly week 1.

02

Market & tax strategy

Domain structure, currency, duty model and fulfilment approach decided and documented. Weeks 1–2.

03

Markets configuration

Shopify Markets, domains, currency and localised checkout built in a safe environment. Weeks 2–5.

04

SEO & content localisation

Hreflang, canonicals, regional catalogues and market content set up correctly. Weeks 4–6.

05

Fulfilment & app checks

3PL or hybrid fulfilment wired in; subscriptions, reviews and loyalty re-tested per market. Weeks 5–7.

06

QA & staged launch

Full cross-market testing, then a controlled launch of the first market. Weeks 7–9.

07

Handover & next market

Documentation, training and a plan to roll out the following market. Week 9–10.

What we check before a market goes live

Every launch runs through the same controls, so nothing ships half-configured.

  • Correct currency, rounding and price display at checkout for each market
  • Duty and tax behaviour matches the DDP or DDU model you chose
  • Hreflang, canonicals and geo-redirects validated, no crawler traps or duplicate content
  • Local payment methods tested end to end with real test transactions
  • WCAG 2.1 AA maintained across every regional storefront
  • Core Web Vitals and Lighthouse held at 90+ after localisation
  • Subscriptions, reviews and loyalty apps confirmed working per currency

Investment

Pricing is typical and scoped after discovery. What moves the number is the count of markets, your fulfilment model, tax complexity and how many apps need reconfiguring.

International expansion FAQs

It depends on your SEO position and how distinct each market is. Subfolders concentrate authority and are simplest; ccTLDs signal local trust but split effort. We map the trade-offs to your situation in discovery and recommend one.
Often, yes, thresholds vary by market. We configure Shopify to handle collection and display correctly, but registration and filing are decisions to confirm with your accountant. We flag where thresholds are likely to apply.
DDP means duties are paid at checkout, so the customer gets no surprise bill; DDU means they pay on delivery. DDP usually converts better for considered purchases. We help you choose per market and configure it.
Not to start. Many brands launch a market shipping from AU, then add a local 3PL once volume justifies it. We model the cost and transit trade-off so you time the move well.
Most do, but subscriptions, reviews, loyalty and bundling apps often need reconfiguring for multi-currency. We audit your stack and re-test each app per market before launch.
A single market is typically 6–10 weeks depending on tax and fulfilment complexity. Multi-market rollouts run longer and we usually stage them one market at a time.
You do. It's your Shopify store, your domains and your accounts throughout. We build inside your environment and hand over full documentation at the end.
You get documentation, training and a rollout plan for the next market. We can stay on for the following markets or support you as needed, no lock-in.
Yes. Shopify Markets supports multiple languages alongside currency. We set up translated content, correct hreflang and localised checkout so each market reads as native.
