When Plus is worth it, and what's at stake
Plus is not an automatic upgrade. It earns its keep when you've hit a wall the standard plan can't clear. These are the walls we see most.
checkout.liquid is gone
Shopify has retired checkout.liquid. Custom fields, branding, upsells and validation now live in Checkout Extensibility, and the full checkout editor with brand controls is Plus-only.
Scripts have been retired
Shopify Scripts have been sunset. Any cart or checkout logic you ran through them has to be rebuilt as Shopify Functions, along with payment and delivery customisations.
Wholesale is bolted on
Running B2B through a discount app or a second store is fragile and manual. Native B2B, company accounts, catalogues, price lists and payment terms, needs Plus.
You're hitting ceilings
API rate limits, staff seats, variant caps and flash-sale throttling all lift on Plus. If peak traffic or integrations keep bumping the limits, that is the signal.
What carries over vs what we rebuild
An upgrade keeps the store intact. The effort sits entirely in the customisation and B2B layer.
| Area | On the upgrade | Effort |
|---|---|---|
| Products & variants | Untouched, same catalogue | None |
| Orders & customers | Untouched, full history kept | None |
| URLs & SEO | Identical, same store, no redirects | None |
| Theme & content | Kept as-is, tuned where needed | Low |
| Apps | Re-checked for Plus and checkout support | Low–Medium |
| Checkout customisations | Rebuilt as Checkout Extensibility | Medium–High |
| Scripts / cart logic | Re-engineered as Shopify Functions | Medium–High |
| Wholesale / B2B | Reconfigured as native B2B | Medium–High |
| Automations | Moved into Shopify Flow | Low–Medium |
Is Plus worth it for you?
Plus earns its keep when
- You need checkout customisation beyond the standard editor, branding, custom fields, upsells or validation
- Wholesale or B2B is a real revenue line, not an afterthought
- You have cart or checkout logic that used to run on Scripts
- Flash sales or traffic spikes throttle your current plan
- You're running, or want, multiple regional or brand storefronts
- Volume is high enough that lower Shopify Payments rates offset the licence
Hold off if
- A standard store is running comfortably inside its limits
- You have no checkout customisation or B2B requirements
- The Plus licence would outweigh the gains at your current revenue
- You want Plus for prestige rather than a specific capability
What the upgrade covers
Because it's the same store, nothing is exported and no URLs change. The work is rebuilding the customisation layer that standard plans can't carry, then unlocking what Plus adds.
What Plus unlocks
- Checkout Extensibility with custom branding and the full checkout editor
- Shopify Functions, custom discounts, plus payment and delivery customisations
- Native B2B, company accounts, catalogues, price lists and payment terms
- Expansion stores for extra regions, brands or B2B
- Organisation admin, more staff seats and granular roles
- Launchpad for scheduled flash sales and drops
- 2x API rate limits and higher capacity at peak
- Lower Shopify Payments rates on qualifying volume
What we rebuild
- checkout.liquid customisations rebuilt as checkout UI extensions
- Shopify Scripts re-engineered as Functions
- Bolted-on wholesale replaced with native B2B
- Manual ops moved into Shopify Flow automations
- Every app re-checked for Plus and Checkout Extensibility support
Data, SEO & continuity
- Same store, same URLs, SEO and rankings fully intact
- Order history, customers and passwords untouched
- Multipass SSO wired up if you need external login
- Staged build on a preview theme, no impact on live
- Delta cutover, the plan switch, with zero downtime
How the upgrade runs
A structured path from readiness check to a clean plan switch. We won't quote a fixed timeline before inspecting your store, the number of checkout customisations, Scripts and B2B rules sets the scope.
Audit & Plus readiness
We inventory your checkout customisations, Scripts, apps and wholesale setup, and confirm which Plus features actually justify the licence for you.
Architecture & scope
We map what stays, what gets rebuilt and what Plus unlocks, then scope the build with clear priorities and a realistic timeline.
Build & rebuild
On a preview theme, we rebuild checkout as extensions, re-engineer Scripts as Functions, and stand up native B2B and Flow automations.
App & integration mapping
Every app, ERP, 3PL and payment integration is re-checked for Plus and Checkout Extensibility, and reconnected or replaced where needed.
Testing & UAT
Full checkout, B2B, discount and integration testing across devices, with your team signing off before we go near the live plan.
Delta cutover & monitoring
We switch the account to Plus with zero downtime, verify live orders and checkout, then monitor closely and optimise over the first weeks.
What the upgrade costs
These are Nexly's build fees for the upgrade work, typical and scoped after discovery. Shopify's Plus licence (from roughly AUD $3,500/month, paid directly to Shopify) is separate.
Checkout Extensibility rebuild
Rebuild checkout.liquid customisations and branding as checkout extensions.
Plus enablement
Checkout, Scripts to Functions, payment and delivery customisations, plus Flow automations.
B2B & expansion programme
Native B2B, expansion stores and headless where it earns its keep.
