Shopify Checkout Customisation: What You Can Actually Change Without Shopify Plus

“Checkout Customization WITHOUT Shopify Plus possible?” is a recurring thread title on the Shopify Community forums, and the honest answer has changed meaningfully over the past couple of years, which is exactly why so much confusion persists. For a long time, editing checkout.liquid directly was a Shopify Plus-only capability, and that fact got repeated so often it’s still widely assumed to be true today, even though Shopify’s rollout of Checkout Extensibility changed the picture considerably for standard-plan merchants.

This post untangles what you can genuinely customise on checkout without Plus today, what’s still Plus-exclusive, and where the actual line sits, because getting this wrong in either direction either wastes money upgrading for something you didn’t need Plus for, or wastes time trying to build something that genuinely requires it.

The Three Tiers of Shopify Checkout Customisation

It helps to think about checkout customisation as three distinct tiers, because merchants often conflate them:

  1. Branding-level customisation (colours, logo, fonts, button styles), available on every Shopify plan
  2. Checkout Extensibility (adding/rearranging functional blocks, banners, upsells, custom fields, trust badges, via checkout apps and Shopify’s app blocks system), available on every Shopify plan today, a major shift from the old checkout.liquid-only era
  3. Deep structural changes (custom checkout page layouts beyond app blocks, custom checkout logic via Shopify Functions for payment/shipping/discount customisation, multiple checkout page templates), still largely Shopify Plus territory

What’s Available on Every Plan (Including Basic)

Checkout branding is available on all Shopify plans through Settings > Checkout > Customize. You can adjust:

  • Logo placement and sizing
  • Colour scheme (background, accent, button colours) to match your brand
  • Typography, font pairing for headings and body text
  • Checkout layout options (one-page vs multi-step where applicable)

This alone covers what a lot of merchants actually mean when they say “customise checkout”, making it look like an extension of their storefront rather than generic Shopify styling.

Checkout Extensibility is the bigger, more recent shift. Since Shopify rolled this out broadly, merchants on any plan can use checkout apps built on Shopify’s app blocks framework to add:

  • Custom banners or announcements at specific checkout steps
  • Upsell/cross-sell offers at checkout (through supported apps)
  • Custom fields (gift messages, delivery instructions, age verification prompts)
  • Trust badges, security seals, and social proof elements
  • Post-purchase upsell offers (the screen shown immediately after payment, before the order confirmation)

This is genuinely new territory that didn’t exist for standard-plan merchants a few years ago, a lot of what used to require custom checkout.liquid edits (and therefore Plus) is now achievable through checkout apps built for Extensibility, available via the Shopify App Store.

What’s Still Shopify Plus-Only

Despite Checkout Extensibility narrowing the gap considerably, some capabilities remain genuinely Plus-exclusive:

  • Shopify Functions for checkout logic, custom server-side logic controlling payment method availability, shipping rate customisation, or discount eligibility rules at checkout based on complex conditions
  • Multiple checkout configurations, Plus allows different checkout experiences (different branding, different upsell rules) for different sales channels or markets from a single store, useful for B2B/B2C hybrid stores or multi-region operations
  • Custom checkout page URLs and deeper white-labelling of the checkout domain
  • Direct access to more granular checkout.liquid-era customisation for edge cases that Checkout Extensibility’s app block system genuinely doesn’t cover yet, this is a shrinking category but not zero
  • Higher API rate limits and B2B-specific checkout features, relevant for larger wholesale operations layering complex logic onto checkout

How to Work Out What You Actually Need

Before assuming you need Plus for a checkout customisation, work through this sequence:

  1. Check if it’s a branding change. If so, it’s available now on your current plan through checkout branding settings, no app, no upgrade needed.
  2. Check the Shopify App Store for a Checkout Extensibility app that does what you want. A growing number of checkout customisation needs (gift notes, delivery date pickers, upsells, trust badges) are covered by third-party apps built specifically for this framework.
  3. Only if neither covers it, genuinely custom logic based on complex conditional rules, multi-market checkout variation, or deep structural changes, is Plus likely the actual requirement.

In our experience auditing Shopify stores, a meaningful share of merchants who assume they need Plus for checkout customisation actually just haven’t found the right Checkout Extensibility app yet, or are trying to replicate an old checkout.liquid workaround that’s no longer necessary because the functionality now exists natively or via an app.

A Practical Checklist

  • [ ] Confirm whether your desired change is branding (available now, every plan) or functional (check Checkout Extensibility apps first)
  • [ ] Search the Shopify App Store specifically for “checkout extensibility” or “post-purchase upsell” apps rather than general customisation apps
  • [ ] If considering Plus specifically for checkout, list the exact functional requirement and confirm no Extensibility app covers it before treating Plus as necessary
  • [ ] For B2B/wholesale stores with genuinely different checkout logic needs per customer segment, treat this as a stronger Plus indicator than general branding requests
  • [ ] Review your current checkout conversion data before customising, cosmetic changes rarely move conversion rate as much as removing genuine friction points (unclear shipping costs, too many required fields, limited payment options)

When Checkout Customisation Is (and Isn’t) Worth the Investment

It’s worth being honest here: checkout customisation, whether branding or functional, tends to have a smaller direct impact on conversion rate than merchants often expect. The biggest checkout conversion gains usually come from more fundamental things, transparent shipping costs shown earlier, guest checkout being genuinely frictionless, the right payment methods (Afterpay, Zip and Apple Pay all matter significantly for Australian conversion rates), and fewer required fields, before visual branding polish. That doesn’t mean branding doesn’t matter; it means it’s rarely the highest-leverage checkout change available.

FAQ

Can I add custom fields to Shopify checkout without Shopify Plus?
Yes, for most common use cases (gift messages, delivery instructions, age verification) via Checkout Extensibility apps available on the Shopify App Store, which now work on any Shopify plan, not just Plus.

Do I need Shopify Plus to add upsells at checkout?
Not necessarily. Post-purchase upsell functionality is available through Checkout Extensibility apps on standard Shopify plans. Plus becomes relevant if you need highly customised or conditional upsell logic beyond what available apps support.

What’s the actual difference between checkout branding and Checkout Extensibility?
Branding covers visual styling only, colours, logo, fonts. Checkout Extensibility covers adding or rearranging functional elements (banners, custom fields, upsells) using an app-block framework. Both are available on all plans; they used to require Plus-only checkout.liquid access before Extensibility rolled out broadly.

Is it worth upgrading to Shopify Plus just for checkout customisation?
Usually not, if your requirement is branding or a common functional addition, check Checkout Extensibility apps first. Plus is worth it for checkout specifically when you need custom conditional logic (via Shopify Functions), multi-market checkout variation, or B2B-specific checkout rules that no app currently covers.

Will customising checkout actually improve my conversion rate?
It can help, but structural friction (unclear costs, limited payment methods, too many required fields) usually has a bigger impact than visual customisation alone. Treat checkout customisation as part of a broader conversion review rather than a standalone fix.

Not Sure Which Tier Your Store Needs?

Whether a checkout change needs an app, a branding tweak, or genuinely requires Shopify Plus isn’t always obvious from the outside. Our conversion rate optimisation service reviews your actual checkout data and requirements before recommending anything, book a call and we’ll help you work out what you actually need.
