If your Shopify store is slow, you’re not just annoying visitors, you’re actively losing sales before people even see what you’re selling. This isn’t a theoretical concern or a vague “best practice.” It’s a well-documented pattern across the ecommerce industry: the general relationship between load time and drop-off holds up across most public speed studies from Google and others, and it shows up consistently in how people actually behave on slow websites.

We’re not going to hand you a fabricated statistic like “a one-second delay costs you X% of conversions” and present it as a precise, verified number specific to your store, because it isn’t, and no agency can honestly tell you that without having actually measured your store. You’ll see plenty of headline stats floating around the internet claiming a precise conversion loss for every extra second of load time. Treat these carefully. They’re usually drawn from a specific study, on a specific set of websites, in a specific industry, at a specific point in time, and ecommerce behaviour varies a lot by category, price point, and audience. A slow-loading page selling a considered $2,000 furniture purchase behaves differently to a slow-loading page selling a $25 impulse buy, because the visitor’s patience and existing intent aren’t the same.

What is genuinely well established, rather than a single fabricated figure, is the direction and general shape of the pattern: as load time increases, the share of visitors who stick around to complete an action decreases, and that relationship tends to steepen the longer the delay runs on. That’s consistent enough across public studies, Google’s own guidance, and general industry experience that it’s safe to treat as real. The exact number for your store, how many extra sales a specific speed improvement would generate, is something only your own data can answer, ideally by testing a genuine before-and-after on your own traffic rather than borrowing someone else’s headline figure.

  2. Test each key template (homepage, collection, product, cart) individually with PageSpeed Insights and Lighthouse rather than only testing the homepage, speed issues are often template-specific, not site-wide.
  3. Check Shopify’s Core Web Vitals data in Search Console if you have enough traffic volume for field data to populate, this reflects your real visitors, not a lab simulation.
